How Often Should You Actually Clean Your Shoes?

August 20263 min readVikshara Ventures Laundry Unit

Shoes are the most-used and least-cleaned thing in most wardrobes. Sweat, rain water and road dust break down materials from the inside. A simple rhythm keeps them going for years.

Daily-wear sports shoes: clean every 4–6 weeks

Insoles and fabric hold sweat and odour bacteria. A monthly professional clean (₹350 a pair, ₹600 for two) keeps them fresh and extends their life far beyond the cost.

Leather and suede: clean every 2–3 months, condition after

Leather dries and cracks without conditioning; suede stains with water. These need material-appropriate care — at ₹625 per pair it's cheaper than replacing them.

Occasion footwear: clean before storing

The worst time for shoes is months in a cupboard with dust and moisture trapped in. Clean them before they go in, not when they come out.

Quick habits that help between cleans

  • Air shoes out after wearing — don't box them damp
  • Rotate pairs so each gets a rest day
  • Brush off dry dirt before it works into the material
  • Never machine-wash unless the label explicitly allows it
