How to Care for Silk Sarees: A Practical Guide

August 20264 min readVikshara Ventures Laundry Unit

A good silk saree outlives trends — if it's cared for. Most damage happens not during wearing, but during washing and storage.

Never machine-wash silk

Agitation and detergent strip silk's natural sheen and can bleed dyes into the zari. Even 'delicate' cycles are a gamble with a saree you'd miss.

Dry clean — but not after every wear

Silk doesn't need cleaning after each use. Air the saree after wearing, and dry clean when it's actually soiled, after a few wears, or before long storage. Over-cleaning wears the fabric too.

Store it right

  • Wrap in a soft cotton or muslin cloth — never plastic covers
  • Refold along different lines every few months to prevent crease tears
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and damp
  • Avoid naphthalene balls touching the fabric directly

Stains on silk: don't experiment

Water marks and home remedies can permanently set stains or leave rings on silk. Blot gently, don't rub, and bring it to a professional. Stain removal on silk depends on the fabric, dye and stain age — an honest cleaner will assess before promising.
